What makes a great caregiver?

1. A caring nature

Okay, so this one’s a given, considering it’s a career in care, but it is essential to have a caring nature. If looking after vulnerable adults is something that you are passionate about, caring about and for these people should be second nature.

2. Quick thinking

Things can change quickly in care, especially when patients have severe care needs. Thus, you must be able to think on your feet and deal with unexpected occurrences. The ability to think quickly in difficult situations can be invaluable – and may save someone’s life.

3. Understanding

Being able to understand the issues facing your clients is essential. Once you try to understand the world from someone’s perspective you help bring solutions to their problems. By listening and understanding, you can always find a way to help improve a patient’s quality of life.

4. Reliability

Reliability is a must when it comes to care. People receiving care rely on and depend upon their caregivers and will often consider them friends. Caregivers must always be on time with everything from administering food to medical care. It is a vital part of the caregiver’s responsibility.

5. People skills

This may be one that you might not think of, but people skills are super important for care givers to have. You may be caring for people with a range of people with different disabilities, various backgrounds and ethnicities. You also need good communication skills in order to interact with other caregivers in a professional and collaborative manner.

6. Patient

Elderly and vulnerable people are often unable to carry out activities as quickly and easily as others. Giving people time and space and showing a great deal of patience is a key to being a great carer.

7. Person Centered Approach

It is essential to treat all patients as individuals when you are caring for them. Each person has a unique set of needs, and different personalities, and it is important that caregivers respond to this appropriately by treating them as the individuals that they are!

8. A passion for care

Here at 1 Stop Healthcare we are dedicated to helping people who are passionate about care to thrive in the healthcare sector. With our training academy, care certificate and NVQ  level 2 and 3 opportunities, we ensure that all our staff who are passionate about care are trained to the max in their chosen specialities.
